Jay Z & Will Smith to Produce HBO Miniseries About Emmett Till

According to Variety:

Jay Z and Will Smith are teaming up to produce an HBO miniseries about Emmett Till.

Aaron Kaplan, Jay Brown and James Lassiter will also executive produce the project alongside Jay Z and Will.

In 1955, Emmett was 14 years old visiting relatives in Mississippi when he was kidnapped and brutally murdered by Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam for allegedly whistling at a white woman. His face and body were so badly mutilated that his mother insisted on having an open-casket funeral to show the world what had happened to her son.

The project is currently untitled.

Tidal Launches New Desktop App + Introduces $4.99 Student Pricing

Tidal is stepping it up ahead of Apple’s new streaming service rumored to launch next week.

The company today announced a new desktop player for Windows and Mac OS X in addition to announcing new student discounts.

Anyone with a valid .edu email address will soon get Tidal’s $9.99/month plan as well as the $19.99 plan for $4.99 and $9.99, respectively.

Spotify offers similar discount pricing for college students at $4.99/month.

If that’s not enough to entice you to use the service, Tidal also partnered with Ticketmaster to make it easier for users to purchase concert tickets.

In an effort to promote his new Tidal streaming service, Jay Z held the #TIDALXJAYZ B-Sides concert at New York’s Terminal 5 on Saturday night.

One of the evening’s many highlights included a freestyle in which Jay blasted YouTube, Spotify, and those fans who have no problem supporting White millionaires but are super critical of Black ones — like himself

In the same freestyle, he also name-dropped Freddie Gray, Michael Brown, and Trayvon Martin.

“So I’m the bad guy now I hear, because I don’t go with the flow

And I don’t need no middle man to talk to my n—-s
I understand if you don’t understand, I figure I’m Jigga

Two American outlaws speed through the Californian desert in a dusty 1960s Pontiac GTO with a manifest poise and stylish swagger that could only be embodied by the world’s foremost musical couple: Beyoncé and Jay Z. Directed by the New York-based filmmaker and photographer Dikayl Rimmasch and soundtracked by an Ennio Morricone classic,Bang Bang is a trilogy of short films starring Mr and Mrs Carter that appeared throughout their two-and-a-half month long tour, On the Run, which celebrated its finale on Saturday at Stade de France in Paris. Rimmasch was introduced to Beyoncé and Jay Z via Mark Romanek, and with a creative cohort in the war photojournalist William Kaner put together a filmmaking approach and aesthetic inspired by French new wave cinema and the powerful intimacy of legendary independent director and mentor, Les Blank. Rimmasch’s stripped-back process paid dividends, allowing an incredibly fast, shoot-from-the-hip style using custom camera rigs that he had designed, 50-year-old Russian lenses and lighting effects by Archie Ciotti and Scott Spencer. Below, we’re in conversation with the steadfast director—also known for his black-and-white campaigns for RRL by Ralph Lauren—about Bang Bang’s conception and what it’s like to direct contemporary music’s most iconic performers.

Jay Z and Beyoncé are set to kick off their joint ‘On the Run’ tour in a few weeks.

Despite their recent family drama, they’re not letting anything get in the way of making this tour money and have released a new trailer entitled “Run” — which is set to their song, “Part II (On the Run).”

The trailer, directed by Melina Matsoukas features starring roles from Sean Penn, Blake Lively, Emily Rossum, Jake Gyllenhaal, Rashida Jones, Kidada Jones…and of course Jay & Bey themselves.

TMZ has obtained a surveillance video of Solange kicking and swinging at Jay Z in an elevator.  Sources say it it all happened at the Met Gala, but the reason for the fight is unclear.

Surprisingly, Beyonce stands by and watches the attack in the beginning but then eventually steps in when Solange attempts to go in for a second round with Jay Z.

[Video] J. Cole Brings Out Jay Z & Kendrick Lamar & Hov Gives Him His Original Roc-A-Fella Chain As A B-Day Gift

On Tuesday (January 27) J. Cole brought his What Dreams May Come Tour to Madison Square Garden In New York City on the same night he celebrated his 29th birthday.

Hov came bearing gifts and presented his protégé with his original Roc-A-Fella Records chain.

"First of all, happy birthday to J. Cole. It's his birthday but he's giving out gifts," Jay said. "So I think it's only right that you get a gift. That, on your neck, is my original Roc chain and it's yours." 

Cole wasn't done with the special guests. He also brought out Kendrick Lamar who performed "Backseat Freestyle."
